If you have a child with disabilities, it can be even trickier to manage this condition. So, in this article, we\u2019ve gathered our top tips for managing <strong>incontinence in children <\/strong>with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-incontinence-and-children-with-disabilities-what-s-the-link\">Incontinence and children with disabilities: what\u2019s the link?<\/h2>\n\n<p>There is evidence that children with both physical and learning disabilities are more likely to experience <strong>urinary and faecal incontinence <\/strong>than their peers<sup> 1<\/sup>, with one study showing that <strong>60.4% <\/strong>of nine-year-old children with disabilities experience some form of <strong>incontinence<\/strong><sup> 2<\/sup>.This is due to a variety of factors.<\/p>\n\n<p>When a child has physical disabilities, there can various mechanisms at play that can cause them to remain <strong>incontinent<\/strong>. \u00a0For example, a child with cerebral palsy may not be able to use the muscles required to be <strong>continent, <\/strong>and a child with Down\u2019s syndrome may have physical abnormalities in their kidneys, which cause issues around toilet training<sup> 3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In other conditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/toilet-training-child-with-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autism<\/a>, a child may experience <strong>incontinence <\/strong>due to factors, such as being nonverbal and unable to communicate when the toilet is needed<sup> 4<\/sup>. Additionally, <strong>constipation <\/strong>is relatively common in children with learning and physical disabilities<sup>5<\/sup>,which in turn can worsen symptoms of incontinence<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-1024x425.png\" alt=\"Boy waiting at the toilet\" class=\"wp-image-9992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-1024x425.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-768x318.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-1170x485.png 1170w, https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor-585x243.png 585w, https:\/\/blog.id-direct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ill-Toiletdoor.png 1401w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Some additional disabilities that may be accompanied by <strong>bladder issues<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fragile X syndrome (a genetic condition causing a range of developmental issues)<\/li><li>Klinefelter syndrome (where male babies are born with an extra X chromosome)<\/li><li>Multiple sclerosis<\/li><li>Paralysis or spinal cord injury<\/li><li>PKU (phenylketonuria; a rare inherited disorder)<\/li><li>Spina bifida<sup>7<\/sup><\/li><li>Moderate to severe learning disabilities<sup> 8<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p>However, as children with disabilities may find it difficult to verbalise their concerns, or parents and healthcare professionals simply view <strong>incontinence <\/strong>as part of the wider picture of their disabilities, <strong>bladder or bowel conditions <\/strong>may go undiagnosed.
